6XMAG-1 from Aimpoint!

Aimpoint released its new line of magnifiers in 2016 and the lineup included a 6X version known as the 6XMAG-1.  If you missed the first general review, read it here, https://guysmilitarygear.wordpress.com/2017/04/17/all-new-aimpoint-6xmag-1/.  After the first article was published, I received some feedback and some unsolicited opinions that I would like to address here.

First, was the price point.  With a MSRP of $907, these can be purchased online in the $800 range with mounts.  While it’s more expensive than the 3x models available, it provides twice the magnification which greatly increases the operational capacity of the weapon.  The fact that people find this overpriced is beyond me.  This is well within the price range of combat hardened scopes produced by reputable manufacturers.  Other reputable low-power variable scopes (LPV) that are “combat rugged” retail anywhere from $1300 to $2300.  So, when you add in the red dot that would obviously be needed, you’re still comparable to other combat sights.  The benefit here is you have the option of red dot or red dot with 6x magnification.  This is my preferred setup for an operational AR or M4 and always has been due to the fact that I prefer red dots for up close and personal work.  Point shooting is fine, but quickly and effectively working your way through a shoot-house and trying to acquire a sight picture through a LPV scope takes more time than with a red dot.  Again, this is only my opinion and personal observation.

The second concern was lack of reticle with magnification.  As I mentioned in the first review, this is one optical option for operators that prefer a red dot for CQB, but also like to have magnification available.  It’s for the soldier, officer or agent that might be employing a Mk18 or similar configuration for engagements out to 100 yards within a village or city, but who also needs to cover ridge lines at 500 yards when pulling security.  Engagements can still be made by holding high past 300 yards.  In addition to this, I was asked why you would need magnification with a red dot when the engagement distances are within 300 yards.  The simple answer is target identification.  If you’ve ever been engaged in a complex tactical situation especially within the confines of an urban area, even with working comms, it’s important to ensure you identify your target before engaging.  This can be difficult through windows or when your field of view is limited but having additional magnification surely helps.  Remember, we aren’t talking about a Mk12 here.  We are talking about an optic setup option for a Mk18 or standard M4.

Here’s the thing.  Everyone has personal preferences, likes and dislikes.  But if you ask me, spending thousands of hours in a shoot-house acquiring a target through a LPV scope gets old real quick.  Hence, why I prefer this setup for a Mk18 or M4 setup.  However, if the 6XMAG-1 is out of your price range, Aimpoint has two other magnifiers available.  One is a commercial version of the their 3x magnifier (3X-C) that carries a MSRP of $307 and the other is their professional 3x (3XMAG-1) that carries a MSRP of $704.

OVERVIEW

The Aimpoint® 6XMag-1 was specifically designed for use with Aimpoint® Micro T-2 and Aimpoint® Micro H-2 red dot sights. This module gives professional users enhanced capability for long-range aiming and observation. A variable (-3 to +3) dioptric setting allows the magnifier to be adapted to the individual operator’s eye.

The 6XMag-1 can also be used as a handheld 6X monocular. Aimpoint magnifiers utilize the red dot in Aimpoint sights as the aiming reticle, eliminating the need for re-zeroing when shifting between non-magnified and magnified aiming.

The 6XMag-1 is encased in a shock absorbing protective rubber cover that also creates an ideal ergonomic grip. Internal optical adjustments make aligning the magnifier and sight quick and easy.
